I opened the gym a few months before I turned 25. So I don’t think I had really thought deeply about what the mission or values for my business would be. I just knew it was what I wanted to do and that I was going to open it. So when about year and half into running the gym and during the second lockdown when I had nothing but time, I started to write a lot of the process for the business down and complied them together into what we call our “staff playbook”. This is what all the coaches at my gym use to make sure that all of our systems and processes are being performed properly so we can provide the best quality of service possible to our members. And right at the start of this staff playbook is a page that has our mission, vision and values.
I’ve updated and changed this a couple times already over the years and upon reviewing it today I noticed that it has now been almost 2 years since it has been updated and I think it really needs some updating. Here is what our stated mission currently says:
“To build a facility that supports over 150 members to reach their goals and improve themselves in every way. To provide opportunities for passionate individuals to earn a decent income doing something they love. To foster a community centred around the pursuit of growth.”
All of the things in this statement are still true. We still want to chase that number, we still are very focused on providing opportunities for coaches and we still really care about creating a community centred around growth. So maybe it doesn’t it doesn’t need as much updating as I thought….
But I think it still does. Because what is the mission really? I guess the answer to that question should be what you would tell someone if they asked you what your business exists to achieve.
And I think the answer to that question is that RIP Training strives to better the lives of Hunter Valley locals through fitness, commitment and community.
So maybe that’s our more simplified version. Because that’s what we want our members and the community to know about us. That we exist to help. We want to continue to better ourselves and want everyone to improve along with us.
Putting a stated mission on paper can actually seem daunting the first time you do it. You see some big companies out there that literally plaster these things on their walls and staff recite it like a mantra. But not everyone has to be like that and that might not be us. But I think that actions speak louder than words and we show our mission through our actions. I believe that I try my best to always be putting my members first and do whatever I can to help and I Truly believe that my staff embody this too.
That’s all from me today, I’ve got a document to edit….
