How to make your Resolution actually happen this year

It’s the new year. Which means that it is a time in which we all reset and look ahead to the year to come. Many of us will set goals of things we want to achieve or even things we want to give up for the new year. Lose 10kgs, get fit again, quit smoking, all of these are common goals for the new year. But the sad truth is that almost all New Years resolutions don’t end up happening. Here’s why:

  • We set a big goal, like losing a certain amount of bodyweight, but then don’t set any plan on how to get there or the daily change we need to make in order for this goal to happen.
  • We get complacent telling ourselves, “I’ve got all year”

So today I wanted to give you a way to turn your New Years resolution into a plan that’s actually going to help you get the change that you want. So first we have to look at what a resolution is. In short, It’s a goal or dream or desire. But what it really is, is us saying that we want to change something about ourselves and our lives. So the first step then almost everyone skips is being prepared to make change. Most people go into the new year thinking “yeah I’ll just be the same me and do everything the same but also be that 10kg lighter”. You have to be prepared to make a change. A lifestyle change and a mindset change. You have to become the person who does the things that someone with that goal does. Want to lose weight? You need to become someone who plans their food and gives a shit about what they put in their mouth. Want to add muscle? You need to be someone who makes training at the gym 4+ times a week a regular part of their routine.

A lot of people actually do get to this step and they set out a plan and they start training or eating differently but they fall off after 4-6 weeks. This is because the changes you make have to be sustainable. They have to be something you can see yourself doing for the entire year and then even for years to come. So you first need to make sure that you are mentally ready to make that shift and then make sure your plan is something you can fit as part of your life for a very long time. So set out a plan to go to the gym. But maybe if you’re starting from nothing you start with 2-3 days a week first and just maintain that for a couple of months before going more often. Make the changes with your nutrition, but maybe instead of going all in on a restrictive diet you just cut out junk food or eating out first and cook at home instead.

So here’s my plan on how to set out your New Year’s Resolution this year so that you can make it happen:

Step 1: Set a goal. Something you want to achieve by the end of the year. Let’s use lose 10kg as our example as we walk through.

Step 2: Identify the daily and weekly habits that you believe a person who has achieved that goal does. For our example it would be train 4 times a week and eat mostly home cooked and prepared meals. Remember our goal is 10kg in a year, this is very achievable and not aggressive so we don’t have to set aggressive lifestyle changes.

Step 3: Set out your plan of what you can achieve now. What are you capable of doing this week and having it be easy and very achievable. It might be less than what the last step was and that’s fine as we can build up to that. So let’s say that first our plan will be to go to the gym 3 times a week and stop eating takeaway and junk food. We will build up to 4 times a week and cooking more ourselves over the coming months.

Step 4: Take Action! Start now! Words are wind and planning all means nothing if you don’t actually get up and start taking action. Don’t wait either. Don’t wait until a set date or time. If you’re feeling motivated and ready then go and take action now. This is the simplest step but also the hardest.

The new year is as good a time as any to make change so lets make this year the year that you make it happen!
